it's been a while...

Here's a post of MANY many drawings I've accumulated throughout last year and this year... I realize I use instagram MUCH more than this ancient blog... so here are some sketches I've been doing just for fun, or when an idea sparks... No matter where I am, if I'm traveling or working a lot, I try to do a personal drawing a week (which doesn't sound like much, but you can imagine sometimes we get during crunch time at the studio and one doesn't quite feel like drawing.)  These pieces are all quite small, like 5"X5" all done in mixed media from: prisma markers, micron pens, ink & quill, and some just permanent markers and pens.

Cinderella- Designing evil stepmother..

The evil stepmother was pretty fun to design. I wanted to create a costume that clearly showed opulence and presence. The evil stepmother (in my version of Cinderella) is an over the top powerful woman that shows characteristics of "more is more," she has a great mixture of renaissance period and medieval combined to look more avant-garde. Not only does she have fur sleeves and a fur collar, but she has a brocade fabric, and a restricting renaissance starched style collar, along with a heavy uncomfortable headpiece. She has embellishments everywhere, and she is so concerned about looks and appearing "higher class," wearing uncomfortable and constricting clothing is not an issue.

Cinderella Costumes: The prince

This is the prince's costume. I wanted something to show that he's quite adventurous but well dressed as well as wealthy, this would be his casual day attire. Got some inspiration from some German medieval paintings, as well as modern influences by Saint Laurent. It's very important to get the happy medium of a modern look combined with historic references to make the character interesting and unique. The breeches would probably be my favorite part of his outfit, they have leather appliques sewed to the side hems to add some detail and texture. His jacquard foulard is very modern (not worn like that in medieval times,) but makes him look more young and cool.

Costume Design for Cinderella Prt. 1

I wanted to do a post to show a bit of my costume design portfolio work :)

By creating this costume design portfolio I wanted to choose a simple story to show my thought process, the tons of research that goes into any costume design and of-course storytelling. 

I choose my simple story to be my own version of Cinderella, and I wanted to have it taking place in a "fantastical" world, a mix of medieval and renaissance periods combined. I took the liberty to take aspects from these eras and make it special to each individual character based on the story, and I mainly focused on Cinderella, the prince, and the evil stepmother. 

NOTE: I do not own any of the photographs, these were used purely for inspiration and research, below each image will show their original source.

 This is the version of the medieval/renaissance Cinderella in peasant form. I wanted to create a simple working outfit made up of two simple elements: a simple DE-constructed apron (shown in my technical drawing above) and a peasant chemise, this is pretty true to the period but she still looks beautiful and appealing to be a lead character. Her skin is much darker in comparison to the evil stepmother, from working in the fields. The apron is made up of several panels in which Cinderella could tuck in part of it to her cloth belt in case it gets hotter working in the fields, this adds interest to her simple outfit but it's also functional. Her chemise is quite simple, yet it has some intricate tonal embroidery at the hem of her linen chemise. Part of the story telling, I wanted to put Cinderella working in the fields of a lavender farm, owned by the evil stepmother (this will play a part in Cinderella's transformation gown for the big ball.)
